I'd heard word that Zenescope was getting ready to issue more of their, um, slightly more unorthodox version of Oz in the not-too-distant future. Sure enough, a little birdie told me that the Grimm Universe Presents 2019 one-shot anthology would have some Oz content. So when I was at Emerald City Comic Con a couple of weeks ago, I made a beeline for Zenescope's booth to snag a copy. Sure enough, "Oz: On the Run" sees Dorothy and Toto running through the Valley of Voe, chased by Jinjur and her amazon warriors. (Hey, I told you this version is unorthodox!) The big mystery is, why is Dorothy blue? It seems that the Wizard has enchanted her or swapped her body or something, and issued orders for the blue girl and her associates to be killed. Fortunately, Dorothy was able to lure Jinjur far enough away from the Wizard's influence to finally convince the general of Dorothy's true identity, and enlist her aid in finding Glinda to stop the Wizard's plans. It's all set-up for the new series, Oz: Heart of Magic.
Towards the end of their last series, the Zenescope version of Oz started dipping into the rest of the books, and even in this short story (it's only eight pages) they are showing that that will continue. In Voe, the dama fruit becomes a plot point, and Jinjur's allies in hunting down Dorothy are the Foxes of Foxville. So while I'm not a big fan of Zenescope's take on Oz, I am looking forward to seeing what elements they will be including in this new series.
