Today's Oz Doodle

In case anyone was wondering (or even noticed), my latest streak ended the other day after forty-three consecutive days of posting. I just ran out of Ozzy things to say. But I have one now! Go take a look at Google today. Pretty neat, huh? Now, if you haven't already done so, scroll over the logo and see why that's there today. Yup, today is indeed the 71st anniversary of the release of The Wizard of Oz to theaters, specifically in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (although that may be in some doubt, as it looks like it may have come out a day or two earlier in Massachusetts). The official Hollywood premiere wouldn't be for another three days, on August 15, but they marketed movies a lot differently back then. Click on the doodle, and it will take you to the search results for "The Wizard of Oz", of course. I also found some of the other Google sites around the world have the same doodle today, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Israel, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Portugal, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, South Korea, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, and Poland.

My question is, why the fuss now? Why not for the seventieth anniversary last year?

Why the 71st anniversary? That's exactly what I've been asking...and I think I've figured it out!
