The latest Oz reading

I'd been hearing about The Legend of Oz: The Wicked West for some time now. The publishers had been putting up lots of art to publicize the series, and it looks really good. So I was surprised at my disappointment at the first issue, which came in the latest batch of comics. But I suppose it was inevitable, as this is a set-up issue, and not a lot happens yet. However, what does happen is interesting. Dorothy keeps having nightmares about the tornado that brought her and her horse, Toto (!) to this strange land three years ago (!!), and she's beginning to accept that she may be there to stay. But they keep finding gold bricks [it's a yellow brick road, people, not gold!!!], getting closer to the wizard who's supposed to be able to help her. She comes to a saloon and gets involved in a gunfight with some desperadoes that turn out to be flying monkeys in disguise (!!!), and has an encounter with a skeptical lawman and a lion.

Despite my disappointment, I'm intrigued enough to want to see where this is going, and it's likely that future issues will pay off with all kinds of answers, such as those ruby spurs on Dorothy's boots. And the art is still gorgeous!
