On this day in h-Oz-story...

One hundred years ago today, an earthquake struck central California, all but destroying San Francisco and many other cities. Among the victims were Dorothy Gale of Kansas; Zeb, a farmhand from Hugson's farm; the former Wizard of Oz, Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmanuel Ambroise Diggs; Jim the Cab Horse; Eureka, a kitten from Australia; and nine tiny piglets from the island of Teeny-Weent (unless, of course, it turns out they were really the children of Prof. and Mrs. Grunter Swyne of the Munchkin Country).

In other words, the Great San Francisco Earthquake was immortalized in Oz books by the opening chapters of Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.
